Big Thinking – Adult Problem Solving
A lot of political arguments between the GOP and the Dems involve money, doesn’t matter how they start, it’s money at the end. There are a few exceptions…but money is the heart of what the American people want the government held accountable. The Clinton campaign against the first President Geo. H. W. Bush summed it up quite succinctly: “It’s the economy, stupid.” The argument goes like this: “Democrats tax, spend and buy votes” (they spend taxes on ‘Bread & Circuses.’) The GOP is the Party of “No,” supposedly blocking money for underprivileged but giving tax breaks to big businesses for support and donation.
Politicians need to grow up and think bigger, MUCH bigger. The American economy can achieve way more than Democrats and Republicans realize. Dems believe the economy needs the government’s help; nothing could be further from the truth. There’s more money in our economy to pay for all the health-care, social security, and pensions we need. But we need to reduce the overall percent of growth for everything to come into balance. Keep modernizing the government with higher efficiency technological tools and the problem will correct itself.
Our economy will run at 2 to 3 orders of magnitude greater than now if the overall tax rate is held at 20% or less and is unfettered. Unfettered is not unregulated, it means true free market forces at play rather than too many restrictive regulations. The US economy can operate at a GDP of about $30 trillion, possibly $40 trillion. At these levels, holding down costs to manageable levels are much easier than at our present GDP. This will require adjustments in education, workforce skills, skill acquisition, and job creation. It also requires serious elimination of barriers to business: ideas, innovation, banking, funding, ownership, and production.
My plan is to use our new found energy resources as a source of capital to fire up our huge economic engine. In essence, we turn on all the valves and buy energy from ourselves and still become the prime energy supplier for the whole world…natural gas, and coal, including all refined oil products the world needs. This isn’t sustainable. We just do it and take the profits from this venture and master the ultimate world’s energy supply, the 174 petawatt fully sustainable energy supply from the Sun (roughly equal to 5,000 times the Earth’s annual energy usage). For this we use “space-based solar capture” technology, beam solar energy from orbit to Earth and have an endless supply of energy for the whole world (we also build a smart power grid that will save a ton of money in the long run). This would be a foreign relations coup. All the nations of the world can invest, share, participate and get their energy, very inexpensively and pollution free from this benevolent supplier.
Think about it. You will find conclusions to some of the most basic political argument and several very serious world problems, a cleaner and more desirable planet, a friendly foreign affairs with room to grow…and a step forward in the level of thought necessary to run the world.
Our present potential leaders are laughable…they exhibit base behavior with each other and try to convince us they still can unravel adult problems. Ha.

I plan to add more input to many of my posts. In many cases I just talk about one aspect of a multifaceted problem; or the problem may change or evolve. Many of these posts could occupy many pages and some could even be books. My plan is to keep them simple, one topic at a time. If I want to expand a piece, I’ll generally write a new post which adds information to the first. Okay? Thank you!

I do like the way you have framed this specific concern plus it really does supply us a lot of fodder for consideration. However, coming from what I have witnessed, I just wish as the actual responses stack on that folks remain on issue and in no way get started upon a soap box of some other news du jour. Still, thank you for this fantastic point and even though I can not really go along with it in totality, I respect your point of view.

Green technology tends to save more money in the long run, deptise being more expensive to begin with for example, motion-sensing light fixtures that only turn on when someone walks into a room are more expensive than regular lights, but after a few years the reduced power usage saves money. What examples of green energy are you looking at that are so cost-inefficient? Around here (Midwest) people have been installing windmills, which are quite green that have consistently proven profitable.
July 28, 2012 at 11:43 am
For one example: replace industrial motors with new high efficiency motors & pumps. This alone would save nearly 25% of the total energy used in the US. There are many, many more less dramatic examples.
July 18, 2012 at 12:25 am
Conservation in conversions and use of industrial motors and pumps to modern plumbing. Net ROI on these projects is around 1 year. There are a huge number of these projects available. These projects are at least 4 or 5 orders of magnitude greater than normal energy saving jobs.
